SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability sits at the foundation of everything we do.

From whole-house retrofits to custom-built objects, we prioritise low-impact materials, energy efficiency, and long-term durability. Our team is increasingly working with wood fibre insulation systems, breathable construction methods, and shell-first approaches inspired by Passive House principles. Across many of our projects, we integrate air source heat pumps, high-performance glazing, and timber-based construction to minimise embodied and operational carbon.

Our lead builder, Joe, originally trained as a stonemason with a Passive House-certified company in Devon. His work focused on lime-based construction and traditional hand-built techniques — skills that continue to inform our approach to breathable, sustainable, and repairable building systems.

Where possible, we design around material optimisation — whether that’s cutting full sheets with minimal waste, repurposing offcuts from local stone yards, or choosing products like EKOPly made from 100% post-consumer plastic. We also partner with independent UK-based suppliers and fabricators to reduce transport emissions and support a more circular building economy.

Our co-founder Elliot recently completed a course in Sustainable Building Adaptation andDevelopment at the Delft Institute of Technology, deepening our studio's technical expertise in sustainable retrofitting. WAJ Studio, led by co-founder Will, embeds timber-led, environmentally responsible design principles across all architectural work.

Whether we’re building a zero-fixings shelf or delivering a full envelope upgrade, we treat sustainability as a technical, creative, and ethical responsibility.
