DESIGN & BUILD
Designed by our sister architecture practice WAJ Studio, this garden office was developed to complement a lively West London home, offering both a functional workspace and a visual connection to the main house.
To address the constraints of the tight site, an innovative build-up was developed. A waterproof barge coating was applied directly to the external face of the neighbouring brick party walls, paired with an internal breather membrane within our timber structure. This effectively created a damp-proof cavity without the need for a conventional build-up, allowing us to construct directly against the boundary walls.
The result is a breathable, fully waterproof space that maximises internal area within a minimal footprint — eliminating the need for external cladding and reducing overall wall thickness.
Externally, our modular prototype cladding system — made from off-the-shelf timber components — provides a warm, textural façade that remains fully breathable. Framed by large-format sliding timber doors, the office creates a strong visual anchor from the kitchen, working equally well as a backdrop or a destination.
